The Galway Music Residency has long had a love affair with traditional Irish music. Since its earliest beginnings, it has explored the links between classical music, traditional Irish music and through its ensemble in residence, ConTempo Quartet, Romanian folk. This marriage of music has been most evident through the ongoing relationship between ConTempo Quartet, Máirtín O’Connor, Garry Ó Briain and Cathal Hayden, who together developed the Spiccato Junction project, a true fusion of traditions. In more recent times, the Galway Music Residency and ConTempo have begun to explore the possible interactions between string quartet and uilleann pipes, the result of which they are delighted to present at the 2019 Traidphicnic Festival on Sunday 7th July at 2pm.

ConTempo Quartet will perform a varied programme of Irish music written for string quartet or music inspired by Irish themes and the uilleann pipes. They will also be joined by talented young Galway piper Pádraic Keane, a musician who has played a key role in ConTempo’s collaboration with the pipes thus far. Together, they will perform works by Amanda Feery and the late Mícheál Ó Suilleabháin written for string quartet and uilleann pipes, as well as arrangements of traditional tunes for this unique instrumental combination.

This project marks the first ever collaboration between the Galway Music Residency and Traidphicnic. Speaking of the new relationship, General Manager of the Galway Music Residency, Maeve Bryan, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Traidphicnic for the first time. This festival truly serves the local community, providing an artfully curated programme of music, art and culture. Community is at the heart of the Galway Music Residency’s mission as well, so this partnership is a very natural one and we’re excited to share the results with the people of Galway.”

This is a family-friendly event. Entry to the festival is on a ‘donate what you can’ basis. Attendees are encouraged to bring reusable cups. Vendors will offer a small discount to patrons using these.
