Galway Music Residency’s Lunchtimes with ConTempo series continues in May with a special focus on the music of Ukraine. At a time of strife and sorrow for our European neighbours, we would like to offer a moment of reflection as well as celebration of the remarkable music of this country. The performance, which features Ukrainian string quartet repertoire takes place on Tuesday 3 May at 1.10pm at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church.

ConTempo Quartet will perform Valentin Silvestrov’s String Quartet No. 3 as the centrepiece of this upcoming concert. Born in Kiyv in 1937, and recently evacuated to Germany, Silvestrov has been described as a quasi-superstar of contemporary music. Galway music lovers will encounter a rare musical experience with this example of Silvestrov’s music, which features lyrical melodies interspersed with music in a more contemporary style.

Silvestrov’s String Quartet No. 3 has an Irish connection. The composer credits Irish-man Eamon Quinn (Louth Contemporary Music Society) with giving him the “impulse and motivation to bring this piece to life.” Silvestrov says of the piece, “I believe there is some Irish accent and some simple melodies that permeate the whole work which may sound as symbols of this wonderful country in whose destiny and historical legacy I perceive a close spiritual affinity to Ukraine, my homeland.”

Entry to the concert is free, all are welcome. BOOKING IS RECOMMENDED THROUGH WWW.EVENBRITE.IE

Patrons are asked to follow Covid-19 regulations inside the venue. Galway Music Residency is proudly supported by NUI Galway (Education Partner), the Arts Council, and Galway City and County Councils. For further information, visit www.galwaymusicresidency.ie
