ConTempo Countywide

Continuing its commitment to bringing performance to local centres throughout County Galway, the Galway Music Residency is delighted to present high quality, collaborative events in partnership with new and old friends: Ballinasloe Library and Group 8; Aisteoirí an Spidéil and Ealaín na Gaeltachta; Athenry Music School and Sligo Academy of Music; and Coole Music.

April:

Join us for our April Countywide performances as the ConTempo capture the essence of the great composer, Joseph Haydn with their rendition of "Seven Last Words". The work is accompanied by poetry by Mark Strand read live by local artists from Ballinasloe and Spiddal. Our first performance takes place in Ballinasloe Library with Group 8 on Saturday 1 April at 2:30pm.

A special second performance takes place in Spiddal with a newly-translated Irish version of Mark Strand’s poetry performed by Aisteoirí an Spidéil. This performance takes place in Réalt na Mara, RC Church, Furbo on Sunday 2 April at 3:30pm.

May:

For our May Countywide performance, ConTempo Quartet joins forces with Athenry Music School and Sligo Academy of Music in a collaborative concert in Athenry Community Hall. The concert will see ConTempo perform a selection of music from the Czech Austro-Hungarian composer Dvorak and the Swedish composer Karin Rehnqvist and perhaps a special collaboration along the way! This performance takes place on Sunday 7 May at 5:00pm.

June:

For our final Countywide performance before the summer, join us in the beautiful Thoor Ballylee near Gort for a collaborative concert with Coole Music. ConTempo will perform a selection of music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Katharina Baker. They will be joined onstage by a number of ensembles from Coole Music with a selection of their chamber music repertoire. This performance takes place at 3:00pm on Sunday 11 June at Thoor Ballylee, Gort.

Contempo Quartet is the resident ensemble of Galway Music Residency and was RTE’s Resident Quartet from 2014 until 2019. Praised as a “fabulous foursome” (Irish Independent) and noted for performances which are “exceptional” (The Strad) and “full of imaginative daring” (The Irish Times), ConTempo Quartet has forged a unique place in Irish musical life.

Galway Music Residency is proudly supported by the Arts Council, University of Galway, Galway County Council, and Galway City Council
